Two or three hundred years ago this was someone’s kitchen. Some holes for grinding grains and pine nuts, with pestle stones or manos, and there’s your cookery. Behind the food preparing area is a rock overhang. I call this the living room. Inside are smoke lined walls. A sandy meadow with ancient fire pits sits in front, and crossing it is a busy trail now used by smugglers.

Here it is, the Mexican/American Border. Beyond the border fence, the red thing, is Mexico. And this side of the fence, well, that’s us.

The road in front of the fence is controlled by the Border Patrol. This picture was taken from Old Highway 80. If you stop on this road to gawk you’ll be visited by a Border Patrol Agent. I was. This is a hot area for illegal entry. The men and women of the Border Patrol stay pretty busy.

While out hiking in this region I bumped into an agent. We walked and talked and he told me some time ago the Border Patrol picked up six illegal Palestinians. Wonder what they wanted?

If you’re hiking  the Border, keep your eyes open, carry water and don’t step on a snake.
